So, I read this article about Alejandra Ojeda from Ipsos and apparently, a third of the country believes that both legal and illegal migration are connected to the crisis of public security. That’s insane! It’s definitely something we should all be aware of.
According to Ojeda’s research, a lot of people view migration as a major risk factor for public safety. They believe that the more migrants that come into the country, the higher the chance of crime going up. But what’s interesting is that this perception is often disconnected from the actual reality of crime rates.
I mean, I understand where people are coming from. It’s natural to want to protect our communities from any potential harm. But we can’t let that fear and paranoia cloud our judgment. We need to understand that migrant communities are not inherently more violent or criminal than anyone else.
It reminds me of this one time when my parents were visiting and we went to this diner downtown. There was a family sitting next to us who were speaking Spanish and my mom made a comment about how they were probably illegal immigrants. I was so embarrassed and had to explain to her how harmful those assumptions are.
All in all, this article is an eye-opener and a reminder that we need to challenge our beliefs and question where they come from. We can’t let misinformation and prejudices dictate our perspectives. Instead, let’s educate ourselves and approach these issues with empathy and nuance.
