So, the other day I stumbled upon this article called “Boric llama a levantar sanciones a Venezuela: ‘Dañan a los pueblos’” and it got me thinking. Basically, this man named Gabriel Boric, who’s running for president in Chile, is urging the international community to lift the sanctions imposed on Venezuela because they harm the people.
From what I understand, these sanctions were put in place to pressure the Venezuelan government to abide by democratic norms, but they’ve also caused shortages of medicine, food and other necessities for the population. Boric argues that the sanctions are ineffective in achieving their goal and that they only serve to worsen the situation.
I think it’s an important discussion to have because it’s easy to forget that sanctions have severe consequences for ordinary people’s lives. When I visited Cuba a few years ago, I saw firsthand how everyday items like toothpaste or shampoo were hard to come by, and how the embargo made it difficult for the country to develop economically. Of course, the context is different, but it made me realize how policies aimed at pressuring a government can have unintended consequences on civilians.
All in all, I hope Boric’s call to action sparks a wider conversation about the effectiveness of sanctions and their impact on vulnerable populations.
