So, I stumbled upon this article that caught my attention. It’s titled “Con lagrimitas de cocodrilo…”: el ácido mensaje de Patricia Maldonado por millonaria indemnización a Fabiola Campillai, and it talks about the controversial response of a Chilean TV personality named Patricia Maldonado to the news that a blind woman named Fabiola Campillai was awarded a huge compensation after being shot in the face by the police during a protest.
Basically, Maldonado mocked Campillai and accused her of faking her blindness in order to cheat the system and get money. She even pretended to cry fake tears, hence the sarcastic title of the article. Many people were outraged by Maldonado’s cruelty and insensitivity, and called her out on social media.
As for me, I must admit I’m not very familiar with the Chilean media landscape or politics, but I find it disturbing how some public figures can display such lack of empathy towards a victim of police violence, especially a person with a disability. It shows how deep the roots of prejudice and discrimination can be, and how important it is to listen to marginalized voices and fight for their rights.
At the end of the day, this article is a reminder that we should be careful with our words and actions, and strive to be more compassionate and respectful towards others, especially those who have suffered injustice.
