As tensions continue to rise across South America, two prominent leaders have taken to social media to insult Chilean presidential candidate Gabriel Boric. Bolivian ex-president, Evo Morales, and current Venezuela leader, Nicolas Maduro, lashed out after Boric made comments about Brazil’s government, which did not sit well with his fellow left-wing leaders. The insults were hurled via Twitter, with Morales calling Boric a “gringo” and Maduro calling him a “traitor” and a “pseudo-progressive”. The social media spat has highlighted the ongoing political and economic crises in the region, as well as the delicate relationships between leftist leaders. The insults also serve to undermine rigorous political debate and open dialogue, instead promoting division and hostility. This incident sheds light on the importance of maintaining a level of professionalism and respect in political discourse, and the potential damage that can be done when leaders resort to childish insults to express their disagreements.
