As tensions simmer between Chile and Bolivia over a surge in immigration, lawmakers are urging the foreign ministry to review existing treaties. Members of the conservative party, RN, are calling for a reassessment of the two countries’ agreements as well as a tightening of border controls to stave off what they say is a potential security threat. The move comes amid a worsening humanitarian crisis driven by an influx of migrants, many of whom are fleeing Bolivia’s long-standing economic and political woes. As the situation unfolds, it will be interesting to see how the governments tackle the problem - and what impact it will have on bilateral relations going forward.
