So, I came across this article about some UDI lawmakers who have written a letter to President Boric asking for the resignation of Pamela Venegas, who is in charge of Estadio Seguro.
Basically, they want Venegas out because they believe she’s not doing a good job of ensuring safety at sporting events. Apparently, they’re upset about incidents like the recent one at the Santiago Wanderers vs Universidad Católica soccer game, where a fan died after being hit in the head by a projectile.
I gotta say, I’m not surprised that this is happening. Safety at soccer games has been a sensitive subject in Chile for a long time. I remember a few years ago, my cousin ended up in a hospital after getting caught in the middle of a fight between opposing fans. It was a scary experience for him and his friends.
Anyway, back to the article. The UDI lawmakers are calling for a more effective system to be implemented, one that includes stricter controls on who gets into the stadiums and greater coordination between police and stadium security personnel.
Honestly, I think this is an important issue that deserves attention. No one should have to worry about their safety when they go out to enjoy a game. Hopefully, the government takes these concerns seriously and takes steps to make the stadiums safer for everyone.
