As the next presidential election in Chile approaches, a recent poll conducted by the research company Encuesta Criteria has revealed the leading candidates. Conservative politicians José Antonio Kast and Evelyn Matthei emerged as the top choices in the survey. Kast, who ran for president in 2017 and received 8.8% of the vote, leads the right-wing with 15.2% of voters supporting him. Matthei, the mayor of Providencia and former presidential candidate in 2013, follows Kast closely with 11.9% support. On the left-leaning side, the current mayor of Recoleta, Daniel Jadue, is in the lead with 10.4%, followed by Foreign Minister Andrés Allamand with 8.2%. The poll also explored voters’ opinions on various social, economic, and political issues in the country. This survey highlights the growing polarization in Chile’s political landscape and the need for candidates to reach across the aisle in order to appeal to a broad spectrum of voters. As the country navigates significant social, economic, and political challenges, it will be essential for the eventual winner of the presidential race to have the vision and leadership to facilitate constructive change.
