Aspiring Chilean presidential candidate Evelyn Matthei recently spoke out about the possibility of running for office. Speaking on the Chilean television program, Tolerancia Cero, Matthei confirmed that she was aware of the challenges she may face, but was still open to the idea of running for the presidency. The former Labor Minister and current mayor of Providencia stated that she has considered running for the position in the past, and is currently watching the political landscape, as well as her own party, to see if the timing is right. Matthei, who served as a senator from 1998 to 2010, emphasized that while she recognizes the difficulties of running, she is ready to face these head-on. As one of the few women who have served in Chile’s government, Matthei’s potential candidacy could represent an important step forward for gender equity in the country. Her remarks have generated considerable attention, and her decision will be closely watched in the coming months. Ultimately, the decision of whom to vote for is up to the Chilean people, but Matthei’s willingness to consider running could represent a promising sign of stronger female representation in Chile’s government.
