Fallo contra diputada Cordera por dichos contra la senadora Campillai: expresiones constituyen el delito de injurias - El Periodista

Yo, so I was just reading this article about a recent ruling against a Chilean congresswoman named Cordera for making defamatory comments about another senator named Campillai. Apparently, a judge found that Cordera’s words constituted the crime of defamation, which is a form of slander or libel that involves making false or damaging statements about someone.

Basically, Cordera had suggested in a speech that Campillai’s blindness was a result of her own carelessness or irresponsibility, which is obviously a really insensitive and hurtful thing to say. Campillai, who lost her sight after being hit by a police projectile during a protest, understandably filed a lawsuit against Cordera for her remarks, and the court ultimately decided in her favor.

This is a pretty big deal because it shows that even public officials can’t just say whatever they want without consequences. It also highlights the importance of being mindful of the language we use and the impact it can have on others. I mean, I’m guilty of using sarcasm or insults sometimes too, but we need to be aware of the line between joking around and intentionally harming someone.

I remember once in high school, a group of friends and I were teasing each other as usual, and one of my friends made a joke about another friend’s weight. I didn’t think much of it at the time, but later I found out that the friend who was targeted had struggled with an eating disorder and had been really hurt by the comment. It was a wake-up call for me about how our words can have unforeseen consequences and the importance of being mindful of others’ feelings.

Anyway, I think this article is a good reminder of those things and shows that justice can be served when people are held accountable for their actions.
