So I was just reading this wild article about a heated argument between the Colombian Attorney General Francisco Barbosa and Defense Minister Iván Velásquez. Apparently, Barbosa straight-up told Velásquez that as long as he’s in charge, there won’t be any UN commission in Colombia. Talk about some serious tension!
Basically, Barbosa is throwing some major shade at Velásquez for supporting a UN commission to investigate police violence during last year’s protests. Barbosa thinks that the country’s authorities can handle the investigation on their own, and doesn’t want any foreign interference. Velásquez, on the other hand, argues that an independent investigation is crucial to ensure justice and accountability.
What’s interesting is that this isn’t the first time Barbosa has clashed with UN officials. Last year, he refused to meet with the UN’s special rapporteur on freedom of expression, claiming that the visit was “inappropriate”. It seems like Barbosa wants to keep the UN out of Colombia’s business, and is willing to dig his heels in to make sure that happens.
Honestly, it’s kind of amusing to see these two top dogs going at it like this. I mean, imagine being the fly on the wall during that argument! But it’s also kind of concerning, because this is a really important issue that affects the lives of millions of Colombians. The UN commission could shed light on some really troubling practices by the police, and help prevent future abuses. But if Barbosa gets his way, none of that will happen.
So bottom line, this whole situation is pretty intense. It’s definitely worth keeping an eye on to see how things play out, and whether the UN commission will eventually get the green light. Let’s hope so!
