Hey, I was just reading this crazy article about a clash between the Colombian Minister of Defense, Iván Velásquez, and the Fiscal General, Francisco Barbosa. Apparently, Barbosa is refusing to let any UN commissions into Colombia as long as he’s in charge!
Basically, the article explains that Velásquez wants the UN to come in and help investigate the army’s involvement in unlawful killings and disappearances. He’s been pushing for this for a while, but Barbosa is putting his foot down. According to him, there’s no need for outside help and the Colombian legal system can handle it on their own.
Personally, I find it crazy that the Fiscal General would just outright refuse assistance from the UN! I mean, if there are issues with the army, then why not let an impartial third party come in and investigate? But then again, I’m not an expert on Colombian politics, so who knows, maybe he has a good reason for doing so.
All in all, it’s a pretty intense situation and it just highlights the ongoing struggle in Colombia with human rights abuses. It’ll be interesting to see how it all plays out, but for now, it’s definitely worth keeping an eye on.
