So, I was reading this crazy article about a Huillín (which is basically a miniature otter) that washed up on the shores of Puerto Natales—but get this—it turns out the little guy had Avian Influenza! Can you believe it?
Anyway, the article talks about how this is the first time they’ve ever found a Huillín with this disease, and how it’s a major concern for the conservation of the species. Apparently, Avian Influenza can be transferred to other animals and even humans, so they’re taking extra precautions to make sure this doesn’t spread.
What’s even more fascinating is how they think he contracted it. They believe he may have eaten an infected bird, which just goes to show how intertwined our ecosystem really is.
As someone who loves animals, I find it really sad that this little guy is sick. But I also think it’s important to remember that human actions can have a major impact on the environment—even something as seemingly small as improperly disposing of waste or pollution can have detrimental effects on wildlife.
Overall, I think this article serves as a reminder to be mindful of our actions and to do our part in protecting the environment and the creatures that call it home.
