Have you ever heard of “baños plurigenéricos”? Or wondered about the state of mental health in schools? These are just two of the many requests made by students occupying the Instituto Nacional in Santiago, Chile. According to an article by Diario Usach, the students are protesting the lack of attention given to their concerns regarding health, infrastructure, and education. Among other things, the protesters have requested gender-neutral bathrooms and psychological support services for students dealing with mental health issues. This news piece sparked my interest because it highlights the importance of listening to the voices of young people who are on the front lines of education in today’s world. As someone who has worked in education and has seen firsthand how institutionalized systems often ignore the needs of marginalized groups, stories like this serve as a reminder that we must listen and respond to the voices of those who are most affected by policies and practices.
