The Secretary-General of the United Nations (UN), António Guterres, spoke out about the need to end racism during the UN’s annual Holocaust Memorial Ceremony. Guterres discussed the role of hatred and discrimination in Nazi Germany and how those same forces are present today in the forms of hate speech, white supremacy, and atrocities committed against migrants and refugees. He called on all world leaders to work towards erasing the “scourge of racism” in their societies and to take a stand against those who perpetuate it. Guterres noted that although progress has been made, recent events, such as the death of George Floyd, show that the fight against racism is far from over. This article serves as a reminder that in order to achieve a truly just and equitable world, it is necessary to actively combat racism and hate of all kinds.
