I just read an article about how the UN is urging Peru and Chile to engage in dialogue to resolve the ongoing migrant crisis. Basically, the situation is that there are a ton of Venezuelan refugees fleeing their country’s economic and political crisis, and many of them are traveling through Peru to get to Chile. But Chile has recently changed its policies and is no longer letting as many refugees in, leaving many stranded at the border.
The UN is calling for both countries to work together to figure out a solution that’s fair for everyone involved. One of the possible ideas they’ve proposed is for Chile to allow refugees to temporarily enter the country while their asylum requests are processed.
Honestly, I had no idea the situation was so serious. It’s easy to think of migration as this abstract political issue, but forget that there are real people suffering and struggling to survive. I remember when I studied abroad in Peru, there were already a lot of Venezuelans there working odd jobs to make ends meet. I can only imagine how much worse it’s gotten since then.
Overall, I think it’s important that we pay attention to stories like this and try to do what we can to help, whether it’s through donations or volunteering. It’s easy to feel helpless and overwhelmed by the scale of the problem, but every small action counts.
