So, I just read this really interesting article about Matthei, a Chilean politician and daughter of a military general, who said that peace is achieved when your rival knows you’re armed. Crazy, right? Basically, she’s saying that in order to have peace, you need to have a credible threat of force.
It seems like a very controversial statement, especially coming from someone in a position of power. But the article explains that it’s actually a tactic used by a lot of politicians and military leaders throughout history. Matthei believes that if you’re seen as weak, your rivals won’t take you seriously and won’t be afraid to attack you.
I have to admit, I can see why this might be effective in certain situations, but I also think it’s important to find diplomatic solutions whenever possible. It reminds me of a time when I was arguing with a friend and things started to get heated. I could have easily yelled or threatened them, but instead I tried to find a compromise that would satisfy both of us. And you know what? It worked. We were able to come to an understanding without resorting to violence or intimidation.
But I guess that’s just a small-scale example. When it comes to politics and international conflicts, things are a lot more complicated. It’s important to consider both sides of the argument before coming to a conclusion. But I do think Matthei’s views are worth discussing, especially if it could lead to a better understanding of how we can work towards peaceful resolutions without sacrificing our own safety.
