I came across a pretty alarming article today about the flu shot. Apparently, more than a million older adults in the country haven’t gotten vaccinated against the influenza virus yet. That’s a pretty concerning number, especially since we’re still in the midst of a pandemic!
According to the article, the Ministerio de Salud (Minsal) has been urging older adults to get the flu shot, but many have yet to do so. This is especially worrying since older adults are more vulnerable to the flu and can suffer more severe symptoms. The article also mentions that there are plenty of reasons why older adults might not be getting vaccinated, from not knowing where to go to thinking they don’t need it.
Personally, I know firsthand how important it is to get vaccinated against the flu. My abuela used to get the flu shot every year and would always try to convince me and my siblings to get it too. We’d always pout and complain, but she was right - getting sick with the flu is no joke.
So, if you know any older adults in your life who haven’t gotten vaccinated yet, please encourage them to do so. It could prevent them from getting sick, and it might even save their life.
