So I just read this article called “No esperes a colapsar” which talks about how Jorge Valdivia, a Chilean soccer player, recently opened up about his struggles with mental health. I thought it was pretty interesting, especially since mental health is still such a taboo subject in many parts of the world.
Basically, Valdivia had been hospitalized for anxiety and depression, but hadn’t told anyone about it until now. He’s been sharing his story as a way to encourage others to seek help if they’re struggling with similar issues. One thing he said that really stuck with me was “Don’t wait until you collapse to ask for help.” I think that’s such an important message, since so many people still view mental health issues as a sign of weakness.
The article goes on to talk about how mental health is still a major issue in Chile, with one in five people reportedly experiencing some sort of mental illness. It’s definitely not just a Chilean problem, though. I think mental health issues are something that affect a lot of people around the world, but it’s still so often stigmatized or brushed under the rug.
Personally, I think it’s great that people like Valdivia are speaking out about their experiences. It can be really hard to admit that you’re struggling with something like anxiety or depression, but knowing that others have gone through similar things can be so comforting. I hope that this article inspires others to seek help if they need it, and to realize that there’s no shame in struggling with mental health.
