So, I just read this crazy article about how the PC and Frente Amplio parties in Chile are trying to reduce rental prices by proposing a… wait for it… terraplanist solution. Yes, you read that right - a group of politicians are relying on the belief that the earth is flat to fix a very real and complicated economic issue.

Basically, they’re proposing that landlords won’t have to pay as much property tax if the land is flat (because apparently, if the earth is round, properties on hills or slopes would have to pay more taxes to make up for the views they offer). This, in turn, would incentivize landlords to lower their rental prices to attract tenants.

But, in reality, it’s not that simple. Firstly, having flat land does not guarantee lower taxes, and even if it did, there’s no guarantee that landlords would actually lower their prices - they might just pocket the extra money. Secondly, even if rental prices were lowered, it could just result in more people wanting to rent, which would drive prices back up.

As someone who has rented apartments in the past, I know how frustrating it can be to find an affordable place to live. But, relying on pseudo-science and conspiracy theories is definitely not the answer. It’s important for politicians to come up with real solutions based on solid economic principles and data, rather than relying on gimmicks or stunts.

In conclusion, the idea of using flat-earth theories to fix rental prices is ridiculous and unlikely to work. While the issue of high rental prices is definitely a pressing one, it’s important for policymakers to rely on facts and analysis when coming up with solutions. Otherwise, we’ll just end up digging ourselves into a deeper hole.
