So I just read this article about Gabriel Boric, the president of Chile, and his stance on government contracts. The title is a bit of a mouthful - Pdte. Boric por caso convenios: “Cuando quienes están involucrados son cercanos al Gobierno, debemos ser incluso más firmes” - but the gist of it is pretty clear.
Basically, Boric is saying that when it comes to awarding contracts to people who have close ties to the government, they need to be extra careful and make sure everything is above board. He’s worried that if they’re not careful, there could be accusations of nepotism or corruption, which would be a really bad look for his administration.
I totally get where Boric is coming from. In my last job, I saw firsthand how easy it is for people to bend the rules if they think they won’t get caught. It’s especially tough when you’re working with people you know well - it’s natural to want to help out your friends and family. But when it comes to government contracts, there’s just no room for that kind of thing.
Overall, I think it’s really smart of Boric to be so cautious about this. It might seem like a hassle to be extra careful with every single contract, but in the long run, it’ll help build trust in the government and make sure that everyone is playing by the same rules. And that’s something we could all use a little more of these days.
