Thousands of workers and labor unions recently marched in Puerto Rico demanding the resignation of Governor Pedro Pierluisi’s predecessor, Ricardo Rosselló, and current governor, Pedro Pierluisi. The protestors were angered by the slow pace of the island’s recovery following Hurricane Maria as well as recent scandals related to government corruption. They also accuse Pierluisi of being involved in these scandals. The march came after nearly 900 pages of private messages between Rosselló and members of his administration were leaked, which included sexist, homophobic and misogynistic comments. Protestors chanted and waved Puerto Rican flags as they demanded accountability and transparency from their government officials. The protest continued peacefully, though it did cause quite a stir. The protest was a demonstration of the people’s power in standing up against corruption in government. It shows the importance of democracy and open communication between the government and its citizens, as well as the need for accountability.
