So I was reading this interesting article titled “Piñera llama a cumplir ‘los dictámenes de la justicia, pero de forma realista’ en caso isapres,” and it really caught my attention. Basically, the president of Chile, Sebastián Piñera, is calling for the insurance companies known as isapres to comply with rulings made by the courts regarding coverage for pre-existing conditions. However, he emphasizes that these decisions must be implemented in a “realistic” manner, meaning that insurance companies cannot be expected to cover conditions that are unmanageable or too expensive.
To put it simply, people in Chile who have pre-existing conditions, such as diabetes or cancer, have been denied coverage by isapres, even though the country’s Constitutional Court has ruled in favor of covering these conditions. Piñera is telling the isapres to follow the court’s decision, but he also wants them to be realistic about what they can afford to cover.
It’s crazy to think that people have been denied coverage for medical conditions that are beyond their control. I remember back when I was in college and didn’t have any health insurance. I was working part-time at a coffee shop and couldn’t afford to pay for medical expenses out of my own pocket. Luckily, I didn’t have any pre-existing conditions, but if I did, I would have been stuck in a really tough situation.
It’s important for governments and businesses to prioritize people’s health and wellbeing. Piñera’s call for isapres to comply with court rulings is a step in the right direction, but it’s important to keep pushing for affordable healthcare for all. No one should have to choose between their health and their finances.
