Relator ONU: “En Chile hay flagrantes violaciones del derecho humano a un medio ambiente sano»

Chilean citizens are facing severe environmental violations, according to a United Nations human rights expert. David Boyd, the UN Special Rapporteur on Human Rights and the Environment, said that Chileans’ right to a healthy environment is being disregarded due to the country’s failure to pass and enforce well-designed environmental regulations. Boyd’s report on Chile states that mining, forestry, and agriculture industries have caused significant damage to the country’s water sources, impacting human health and wildlife populations. Additionally, air pollution in major cities remains a significant problem, and waste management is inadequate. Chilean officials have acknowledged the report’s findings and pledged to take action to protect the environment and people’s fundamental human rights. The issue highlighted here raises questions about the delicate balance between economic growth and environmental protection and the need for policymakers to ensure that the latter remains a top priority.
