So, I just read this crazy article about a woman who took her autistic son out of the hospital after 16 hours on a plastic chair bed. Apparently, the hospital in Talca reported her to the police for “kidnapping” her own child. Can you believe that?
From what I gathered, the mother was frustrated with the hospital’s treatment of her son and decided to take him home. She claims the hospital didn’t have a proper bed for him and was uncomfortable with him sleeping on a plastic chair. I don’t blame her; I mean, who wants to be in a hospital for 16 hours, let alone on a plastic chair?
But the more I think about it, the more it raises concerns about the state of healthcare, specifically for people with autism. It’s no secret that our system has to improve when it comes to treating autism, and if this is the kind of treatment parents and their children receive, it’s telling. I may not have any experience with autism, but I find it disheartening that people have to deal with this kind of treatment.
Overall, this article sheds light on the flaws in our healthcare system and raises concern for parents with autistic children. I hope that it encourages us as a society to take a closer look at how we treat those with autism and make the necessary changes.
