The latest visit of the United Nations to Chile has called for universal access to clean water and air. The UN’s rapporteur on hazardous substances and waste, Marcos Orellana, recently spent ten days in the country and addressed alarming levels of pollution and environmental negligence. According to Mr. Orellana, indigenous communities have been particularly affected, with many lacking even basic sanitation. In Santiago, air quality is so poor that residents have been urged to avoid exercise and stay indoors during peak smog periods. The UN has called on the Chilean government to take urgent action to protect public health and safeguard the environment. Access to clean air and water is a fundamental human right, and the findings of this report emphasize the importance of protecting our natural resources.
