Un experto de la ONU señala que el tartrato de los talibanes a la mujer se podría considerar un “apartheid de género”

An expert from the United Nations (UN) has recently highlighted the treatment of women by the Taliban and argued it could be categorized as “gender apartheid.” This caught my attention as it sheds light on the severe and oppressive conditions faced by women in areas controlled by the Taliban.

During a briefing to the UN Human Rights Council, UN expert Nazir Afzal drew attention to the harsh measures imposed by the Taliban, including restrictions on women’s mobility and access to education and healthcare. He likened these measures to a system of gender apartheid, drawing a parallel to the historical apartheid regime in South Africa that institutionalized racial discrimination.

Afzal emphasized that the term “apartheid of gender” would aptly describe the systematic segregation and oppression faced by Afghan women. He further noted that under Taliban rule, women are being pushed out of public life, denied their basic rights, and subjected to brutal punishments.

The situation for women in Afghanistan has deteriorated significantly since the Taliban regained control of the country in August 2021. Many fear a rollback of the progress achieved in women’s rights over the last two decades. This amplifies the urgency of international attention and action to safeguard and support Afghan women.

It is crucial to recognize and shed light on the plight of Afghan women under the Taliban regime. By framing their treatment as “gender apartheid,” Afzal draws attention to the severity of the issue and encourages a focused international response. The international community must continue to prioritize the protection and empowerment of Afghan women, supporting organizations and initiatives that advocate for their rights and equality. Only by remaining committed to gender equality can we work towards a world where every woman can live free from discrimination and oppression.
