The Chilean government recently proposed a new alternative healthcare plan that would allow citizens to leave their isapres (private healthcare insurance companies) and join the public health system. However, many critics, including the mayor of Vallejo, are concerned that this idea is just a way to wipe the slate clean and allow isapres to continue with business as usual. According to Vallejo, the project does not address underlying issues with the healthcare system in Chile, including a lack of resources and unequal access to care. Additionally, critics are concerned that isapres will simply raise premiums for those who choose to stay with them, thereby penalizing those who benefit from the new alternative plan. Though this proposal is still in its early stages, the backlash against it highlights the deep divides and challenges of the healthcare system in Chile.
