Vallejo, a Chilean consumer watchdog, recently accused private health insurance companies, known as Isapres, of disregarding a Supreme Court ruling that demanded them to end discriminatory treatment towards women in their pricing policies. The watchdog claims Isapres have found ways to bypass the ruling by introducing new formulas that still retain gender-based price differentials. In response, Isapres described Vallejo’s accusations as “outrageous,” and insisted that they had complied with the ruling. The tension between Isapres and consumer advocates over discrimination in healthcare is a long-standing issue in Chile. Isapres argue that gender-based pricing is necessary to maintain equitable pricing, while consumer groups counter that it disproportionately affects women. The issue has been a topic of ongoing debate and highlights the need for greater transparency and accountability in the healthcare industry.
